Sir Francis Drake

Centenary Year 1907-2007

Plymouth (Sir Francis Drake) Bowling Club Welcome to the Plymouth (Sir Francis Drake) Bowling Club web site.

The club has one green which usually uses 6 rinks but can accommodate up to 8 rinks for friendly matches; the game played is flat green bowls.
We are situated in Plymouth, in the county of Devon on the border of Cornwall, in a residential area of the city called Mannamead - not on the Hoe which the club left in 1922. As most bowlers know Plymouth is supposedly the home of bowls.

The club was first founded in 1907 on the Hoe but moved to our present location in 1922; it was a male club until 2001 when a Ladies section was formed.

We celebrated our Centenary Year in 2007, with several prestigious being matches played.

For our Centenary Year we have produced various "Limited Edition" Centenary items:

Lapel badge - £2.50
Pen - £1.50
Chalk/pill box - £4.00
Bookmark - £3.50
Cuff links (in green leatherette presentation box) - £6.50
Tie bar - £3.50
Ladies brooch (in green leatherette presentation box) - £3.50
We are affiliated to the English Bowling Association, English Women's Bowling Association, Devon County Bowling Association & the Plymouth & District Bowling Association.

Due to the fact that this is a private club and the grounds are owned by members we have trustees who oversee the running of the club.

The club plays mostly friendly games but we do play in competition matches so that all avenues of bowling can be enjoyed by our members.
Several of our members have made it to Worthing in the National competitions and we have as a member an International player.

All prices include postage and packing, and are available through mail order. Please state your requirements, and include a cheque made out to 'Plymouth (SFD) B.C.'.

The winner of the the Club draw for a set of "Tiger" bowls was Ann Jones of Plymouth Civil Service Ladies B.C. The winning ticket was drawn by David Bryant on 24th July 2007 when he was at our Club playing for the EBA President's team.

Club TieClub Badge The colours of the club are green with stripes of black and silver in the tie. The club badge is oval with a green cross and four castles therein, and our members also wear a green blazer. We have not as yet decided to wear coloured shirts, but are staying with white.

As stated the club is privately owned and we have large changing rooms, two roomed lounge with bar, run by members, and a recently renewed kitchen. Most catering is sandwiches or hot pasties, there is no call for cooking of food on premises. The Club Bar

We have a membership of 69 Men and 20 Ladies but are always welcoming new members. We have a club night once a month, as this time is a good occasion to introduce and invite prospective new members -application is via the secretary who will supply application forms.

Membership fees this year are £110 for playing or £8 as non-playing members.
We hold several social occasions during the season and during the closed winter period to bring members together and at the same time to make some profit to assist in the running of the club. During the winter months we hold friendly matches with nearby indoor clubs again so that members may meet.

Visitors and spectators are warmly welcomed and we have an excellent viewing area where spectators can observe the games in comfort out of the cold and wet.

We do have some members who have attended coaching courses and if a member has not played before they are encouraged to have a few lessons before playing in games, it is surprising how much damage can be caused unintentionally by an untutored player.

During the season we hold friendly matches with touring teams from all over the country and are always looking for more. If you would like to arrange a fixture with us, please see our contacts page.
